What is Psychologically Informed Coaching?

Psychologically informed coaching heightens awareness of your present situation so that you can further develop in the areas that are important to you. A number of proven psychological approaches are outlined below which can assist goal realisation and increase resilience and wellbeing.

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

“Psychology is the scientific study of human flourishing, and an applied approach to optimal functioning. It has also been defined as the study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals, communities, and organisations to thrive.”

Positive psychology is integral to a ‘Coach Approach’ and is an ‘add’ on to therapeutic work, as it celebrates the strengths and resources of individuals , inspiring them to reach their goals and beyond.

TheArtOfBeing utilises Positive Psychology's research in MENTAL and EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE and WELLBEING.

MINDFULNESS

Is used therapeutically to counter some forms of depression, anxiety and related conditions. It has now branched into further therapies (Third Wave) ie Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT). These therapies can also be blended with other approaches i.e. Coaching.

EGO STATE APPROACH

Ego state is used to address and resolve the internal turmoil and conflicts experienced by an individual.

These conflicts often cause emotional, symptomatic and behavioural distress, as well as disturbed thought processes.
Within this work there are opportunities for each part of the ‘psyche’ to put forward their viewpoint, eg express their fears/doubts about moving forward; discussions between various parts eg. inner resources, strengths, emotional barriers and saboteurs. The intention of such intrapersonal discussion is that acceptable and agreed compromises and solutions for the person ‘as a whole’ can be reached.

Building rapport and showing respect for each and every part of the psyche is key to progress. Ego state therapy is a powerful technique for successful change work. As in all my approaches the overarching goal is for stability, change and long term maintenance.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)

CBT is looking at the relationship between thought, emotions and behaviours etc.

There are two main forms of CBT: Beckian CBT developed to treat depressed patients; and the more philosophical humanistic Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) created by Albert Ellis. While both are used at TheArtOfBeing to produce more realistic current thinking patterns, it is the latter which has more applications throughout a range of conditions. It's more philosophical and unique approach means that clients leave coaching much better equipped to unconditionally accept themselves and gain a more flexible and adaptable approach to everyday stresses as well as major life changes and traumas. Current research (epigenetics) shows that by changing behaviours and thought processes we can, over time, affect genetic coding for emotional well being.
